FREE TO SEA The UK’s top ten free attractions revealed – and six are in Scotland
THE top ten free attractions in the UK has been revealed and a group of Scottish islands have taken the top spot.
The study by Go Outdoors looks at everything from Tripadvisor reviews to Tiktok views to determine the best cost-effective activities to do across the UK.
And the group of tiny islands in St Kilda is number one on the list as the best free attraction to visit in 2023 with the rest of the top five full of other Scots places to visit.
With crystal clear water and one of Europe’s highest cliffs the remote group of island’s based in the Hebrides managed to beat out top tourist attractions like the London Science Museum and Windsor Park.
Home to just a few locals the islands are best known for their incredible wildlife as explorers can expect to see puffins, whales and even the odd basking shark.
Staffa National Nature Reserve is second with an overall rating of five stars on Tripadvisor as the volcanic island is a popular tourist attraction.
Just off the west coast the tiny half a mile long island is best known for its unusual hexagon columns and its impressive Fingal’s Cave.
Goatfell mountain on the Isle of Arran rounded off the top three as the popular beauty spot is a must do destination for any keen hillwalker as it offers spectacular views.
The breath-taking St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve finished fourth with its dramatic cliffs and stunning coastal views.
The nature reserve offers the feeling of being somewhere completely remote while just being off the A1 so is perfect for a summer day trip.
Grey Mare’s Tail competes the top five with one of the UK’s tallest waterfalls as water plunges from 60m above the valley into the beautiful Loch Skeen below.
Stirlingshire’s Ben Lomond also made the top ten coming in seventh with an average Tripadvisor rating of 4.5 stars.
The stunning mountain in the Scottish Highlands is a popular hillwalking destination as it offers spectacular views of Loch Lomond and the beautiful Trossachs National Park below.
